If you are a small, South Asian women-founded business, I strongly urge you to prioritize trademarking your brand ASAP.

I understand that when you are just starting out, it might seem unnecessary and or resources can feel limited. However, securing a trademark is one of the most important investments you can make to protect your work. It is often the only safeguard that can prevent larger, established brands from unintentionally or otherwise adopting your name, logo, or overall brand identity. Best believe there are many out there out there waiting to do just that.

Without this protection, years of hard work, creativity, and financial investment can be jeopardized overnight. A relatively modest investment often around $1,000 can be the difference between protecting your brand and losing it.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve experienced a wide range of emotions after learning that several large brands have used our brand name and brushing it off as if it’s simply an oversight which is unacceptable.

Many of these brands proudly highlight their support of small artisans as part of their storytelling. One can only hope that this commitment extends beyond marketing, and is reflected genuinely in their actions as well.

While this has been deeply challenging, I wanted to share this as a cautionary note and a sincere warning to others building their own businesses.
